Best practices for saved searches?

We would like to give ClientContact's the ability to save searches. How is this typically done? I'm thinking I can store the savedSearch ID as a custom field on the ClientContact, but I'm wondering if I should be using savedSearchAssociation instead. What is the intended purpose of savedSearchAssociation?

The SavedSearchAssociation is not related to the Saved Query system in the CRM application. For more specific information, please review the following link.
